The Achievers and Imperial Champions Toastmasters Clubs hosted their Annual Humorous Speech and Evaluation Contests at the Paradise Beach Hotel last Sunday, 4^th October.

 

Patrons and other public Speaking enthusiasts who turned out to the function saw competition among five contestants in the Humorous Speech Contest and five competitors in the Evaluation Contest.

 

Tickling the audience’s fancy for humour were Toastmasters Nigel Scott; Anika Stapleton and Gloria Williams.  First to approach the lectern was Toastmaster Gloria Williams who took the audience through personal experiences in her family to make a point for effective listening in a speech entitled “It Pays To Listen”.  Her presentation was loaded with body gestures, drama and anecdotal stories which forcefully brought her point home.   She was a natural.

 

Following her, was champion speaker Toastmaster Anika Stapleton.  Anika’s speech, entitled “Along the Highways and Byways in America”, chronicled her experiences trying to get to an airport in the United States to return home after her ‘International Speech’ debut.  Her speech unveiled a comedy of errors that kept the audience on their toes.  Toastmaster Nigel Scott then graced the front resplendent with walking cane.  All in an effort to portray “Lame Excuses Men Make”.  As if the cane was not enough, Nigel’s hilarious discourse had those gathered rapt at attention simply to find out how more ridiculous the next point could be.

 

The Evaluation Contest saw contestants Listening to and appraising the test speech which was the final speech in the competition.  The contestants, who were Toastmasters Marlon Stevenson; Garcia Cato; Ryan Hazell and Jo Elliot, were given five minutes to analyze and write an evaluation of that speech.  The audience was enthused to hear the delightful and honest way in which these comments were presented and noted that none were derogatory.

 

In keeping with the general theme of humour, stand-up comedian, Maurice Horne gave a stalwart performance moving the crowd from issues like working as a teacher and the problem with Mathematics in school through to doctor visits and using pancakes as remedies of certain ailments, and all the way to tips for choosing a wife.  The audience’s peals of laughter acted as a further impetus for Mr. Horne to drive his punch lines home.

 

At the end of the evening Toastmaster Gloria Williams was adjudged winner and therefore, representative to the regional contest during the Toastmasters Regional Conference in Barbados from October 16^th to 18^th.  Placing second was Toastmaster Nigel Scott and Toastmaster Anika Stapleton was awarded the third position.  In the Evaluation Contest Toastmaster Jo Elliot was judged winner and will also represent the Vincentian Toastmasters at the regional conference in Barbados later this month.

Toastmaster Gloria Williams is now the Caribbean Toastmaster Humorous Speech Champion.  She won this title at the just concluded Caribbean Toastmasters Conference of District 81, which was held at the Accra Beach Hotel during the weekend of October 16^th to 18^th.  

 

On Sunday, 4^th October 2009, Gloria won the local leg of the competition from a field of three contestants, at the Toastmasters Annual Humorous Speech and Evaluation Contests held at the Paradise Beach Hotel.  This title made her eligible to compete at the regional level.

 

The regional competition took place on Saturday, 17^th October during the District 81 Conference.  With a speech entitled: “It Pays To Listen”, Gloria took her audience through some of her experiences as a child where her neglect for effective Listening landed her and another member of her family into serious trouble.

 

From her initial appearance on stage, Gloria had the crowd laughing as she portrayed that indeed, she had learnt that one should dress to suit the content of his speech.  In a presentation riddled with excellent diction, intonation, vocal variety and perfect grammar, Gloria’s black-lace, old fashioned suit; grandmother wig and Steve-Urkel-style glasses, were simply compliments to her wealth of dramatic gestures which she unloaded on the crowd. 

 

One thing is for sure.  And that is that the Caribbean audience will never forget that especially when receiving instructions, one should always listen.  Regional Toastmasters were swept away by the fact that when given the instruction by her older brother to approach a vagrant and say “Togo the beast!” and run, Gloria impulsively ran up to him without listening properly, stood up there and said, “Togo the beast and run!”  This almost cost her time, as the audience who were warned to minimize their laughter until after the speeches, almost could not stop laughing.

 

At the end of the evening, Gloria was awarded Champion.  Keith Yarde of Barbados placed second and Carlyle Fletcher of Trinidad and Tobago placed third.  The other competitors hailed from the Cayman Islands, Curacao, Guyana, Jamaica and St. Maarten.  The Evaluation Contest which took place on that same afternoon, saw Kimberly Valendi Dorceus of Haiti emerging the winner.
