PRESS RELEASE

The Achievers and Imperial Champions Toastmasters Clubs, in continuing to promote personal development in St. Vincent and the Grenadines, hosted their Annual Humorous Speech and Evaluation Contests at the Paradise Beach Hotel last Sunday, 4th October.

Competition  was seen among three contestants in the Humorous Speech Contest who were Toastmasters Nigel Scott, Anika Stapleton and Gloria Williams. The four competitors in the Evaluation Contest were Toastmasters Marlon Stevenson, Garcia Cato, Ryan Hazell and Jacinta ‘Jo’ Elliot..

The audience was taken through a wealth of humour as Gloria Williams, in a speech entitled “It Pays To Listen”, took the audience through personal experiences in her family to make a point for effective Listening in a presentation loaded with gesticulations, dramatic overtures and anecdotal stories which forcefully brought her point home.

Champion speaker Toastmaster Anika Stapleton’s   speech, entitled “Along the Highways and Byways in America”, chronicled her experiences trying to get to an airport in the United States to return home after her ‘International Speech’ debut.  Her speech unveiled a comedy of errors that kept the audience glued in.  Toastmaster Nigel Scott then graced the front using a walking cane.  His presentation was entitled, “Lame Excuses Men Make”.  Nigel’s hilarious speech had those gathered wrapped up in his story simply to find out how more ridiculous the next point could be.

The Evaluation Contest saw contestants listening to and appraising the test speech which was the final speech in the competition.  The contestants were given five minutes to analyze and write an evaluation of that speech.

In keeping with the general theme of humour, stand-up comedian, Maurice Horne gave a stalwart performance providing ball-by-ball humour which kept the crowd thoroughly amused.  The audience’s peals of laughter acted as a spur for Mr. Horne to drive his punch lines home.

At the end of the evening Toastmaster Gloria Williams was adjudged winner and therefore, representative to the regional contest during the Toastmasters Regionala/District Conference in Barbados from October 16th to 18th.  Placing second was Toastmaster Nigel Scott and Toastmaster Anika Stapleton was awarded the third position.  In the Evaluation Contest Toastmaster Jacinta ‘Jo Elliot was judged winner and will also represent the Vincentian Toastmasters at the regional conference in Barbados later this month.
